Exploring the Sustainable and Land-based Cultures of the Ohlone and Bay Miwok Tribes
My research initiative seeks to engage undergraduate students in exploring the chemistry in food ingredients, medicinal natural products, and plant chemistry, used by the Ohlone and Bay Miwok Tribes. This research includes studying chemical processes like acorn tannin removal, heavy metal chelation by tule brush, and active compounds in soap plant bulbs, alongside investigating the environmental conditions for growing these plants. The findings will be integrated into undergraduate chemical education and curriculum as well as community-based STEM outreach activities.
