Research interests

Primary research theme:

Genetics of Enamel Formation and Impact on General Health. The genetic changes causing Amelogenesis Imperfecta – the hereditary failure of enamel formation – is the main research focus. The multi-disciplinary research team has collaborated with UK and overseas partners to contribute to the understanding of biomineralisation and the biology of other tissues and organs through its discoveries. Research findings supported the successful case to establish a NHS panel test for Amelogenesis Imperfecta for use in clinical care; this is the first instance of this in Dentistry. Establishment of the UK Amelogenesis Imperfecta Clinical Excellence Network (AI CEN) in ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ (2018) has supported integration of Amelogenesis Imperfecta genetic testing in to specialist Paediatric Dentistry. This aligns with the national policy for precision diagnosis and supports informed future development of clinical services.
