The Academic Unit of Health Economics (AUHE) was established in 2007 as part of the ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ Institute of Health Sciences (LIHS) within the School of Medicine at the ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ. It has been led by Professor David Meads since 2024.

We have a wide portfolio of over 70 applied and methodological research projects funded by the NIHR, research councils, charitable organisations and industry.  We also deliver an extensive teaching programme, including for undergraduate medical students, undergraduate economics students at ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ University Business School as well as courses for various health professionals.  Additionally, we have a thriving community of .

Our team consists of around 30 researchers with expertise including economic evaluation, health inequalities analysis, decision modelling, simulation and capacity modelling, discrete choice experiments, , systematic review and evidence synthesis. 

We engage with policy makers, clinicians, clinical scientists, basic scientists, patient groups and other applied health researchers. Our research is multidisciplinary and based on strong collaborations across ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ, other UK institutions, and internationally.

AUHE is one of six divisions within LIHS, which brings together a multidisciplinary team of over 175 staff delivering applied health and care research and student education. It has more than £10 million in annual external research funding, and is recognised for excellence in clinical and research methods teaching at ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ and internationally, and for its doctoral and fellowship training opportunities.
