Profile

I am a Senior Research Fellow and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the Institute of Data Analytics and Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine at the ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ and at ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

I qualified in medicine at the University of Cambridge and obtained a MA (Hons) in neuroscience. I then worked as a junior doctor in London before undertaking speciality training in Cardiology, most recently at ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ General Infirmary. After becoming a member of the Royal College of Physicians I was awarded a Clinical Reserach Training Fellowship by the British Heart Foundation and a PhD Enrichment Scheme award by the Alan Turing Institute. I completed a PhD at the University on the use of machine learning to predict atrial fibrillation in the general population using routinely collected datasets in primary care, which I then took into a prospective clinical study during my NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturership in Cardiology. I am now a Health Data Research UK Fellow and hold a NIHR award to further my research in clinical trials.

My research incorporates the use of large routinely-collected datasets to develop and validate prediction models, particularly in the area of atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation after stroke, and cardio-renal-metabolic disease. I am also now translating these prediction models into clinical trials to determine if they can improve care and outcomes. My clinical interests are in prevention, early detection and screening for cardio-renal-metabolic disease. I supervise PhD, MD, and MSc students.

I have been awarded Young Investigator Award at the British Society of Heart Failure and at the Heart Rhythm Congress. I have also been a finalist for the Young Investigator Award at the European Heart Rhythm Association Congress, ESC Preventative Cardiology, and the President’s Prize in Cardiology at the Royal Society of Medicine.

I have been a primary and co-applicant on successful grant applications with the British Heart Foundation, National Institute of Health and Care Research and ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ Hospital Charity. I am also a member of the e-cardiology working group and Stroke Council of the European Society of Cardiology, and the Future Leaders in Health Forum at the ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ Institute of Data Analytics. I am a member of the British Cardiovascular Society, Royal College of Physicians of London and the European Society of Cardiology.

Research interests

Leveraging machine learning in population-based data to identify individuals at high risk of atrial fibrillation, heart failure, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and cardio-renal-metabolic disease. I am now translating these prediction algorithms into clinical trials. I also use of population-based data to understand disease incidence, outcomes, and care quality.
