Life-threatening injuries include:
- A non-responsive person (unconscious), whether or not they are breathing.
- Persistent or sudden chest pain.
- Difficulty breathing.
- Uncontrollable bleeding.
- Severe altered level of consciousness (mental status).
- Injuries involving trauma (falls, head injuries, severe burns, etc.)
Call 911 and describe the nature of the medical incident and your location.
Stay with the victim until medical or law enforcement personnel arrive. Keep the person calm and as comfortable as possible.
If you are trained and comfortable doing so, provide care until professional emergency responders arrive.
- Do not provide first aid that exceeds your level of training.
- Wear disposable gloves.
- Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water for at least 30 seconds after exposure to bodily fluids such as blood, vomit, saliva, etc.
- Control serious bleeding by applying direct pressure on the wound.
- Begin CPR if the victim is not breathing. Send someone to get an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
- Do not move the person unless absolutely necessary.
- After the incident, complete the First Aid Incident Form and submit to emergencymanagement@csueastbay.edu or forward to Emergency Management, SA 1600.
